The Scottish merchant Hugh Robertson and his brother founded the Glasgow firm of Hugh Robertson and Company, which specialized in import-export. A Montreal branch was opened in 1815, and Joseph Masson (1791-1847), a former employee there, was appointed manager and became a shareholder. The company was henceforth known as Robertson, Masson and Company. Masson eventually became majority shareholder and the firm diversified, opening new branches named for various shareholders and partners. Joseph Masson was one of the most successful French-Canadian businessmen of the first half of the 19th century.

Scope and ContentLetter of response from Colin C. Ferrie to Joseph Masson. Among other things, Ferrie informs Masson about the mortgage conditions he is prepared to accept to further the interests and objectives of his family, and of Masson. He also reports on the affairs of the Strang and Company branch, in which his father and Masson are both shareholders.
