Scope and ContentThis document is the ledger of the merchant Abiel Macomber, of Fort Cumberland, Nova Scotia, for the period from 1759 to 1835. The former French Fort Beauséjour was renamed Cumberland when it was taken over by the British in 1755. The ledger contains more than the lists of purchases required to supply the fort. It also includes a transcription of the concession of the district of Cumberland, Nova Scotia, dated April 4, 1760 and granted by Charles Lawrence (1709-1760), governor of the province. This indicates that the land consisted of some 100,000 acres and that 95 exploitation rights were granted to 95 individuals, among them Abiel Macomber. In addition, the ledger contains drafts and copies of letters of military orders and, at the end, a number of poems apparently written by Macomber.
