Scope and ContentLouis-Joseph de Montcalm, Marquis of Montcalm (1712-1759), lieutenant-general of the troops in New France, addressed this letter to Louis-Hyacinthe Boyer de Crémilles (1700-1768), recently named deputy to the secretary of state for the War Department, Charles-Louis-Auguste de Fouquet, Duke of Belle-Isle (1684-1761). When he wrote the letter, Montcalm was not aware that Crémilles had already been appointed, but clearly supports his candidacy. Montcalm tells his correspondent that he has still not received a letter from the War Department, expresses the hope that the favours requested for the troops serving with him in North America be granted, and asks Crémilles to foster the preferment of his two sons. He also stresses his earnest wish to be recalled to France. Less than a month later, on July 8, 1758, Montcalm would win a major victory over the British at the Battle of Carillon, part of the Seven Years’ War (1754-1763).
