Scope and ContentFrançois-Gaston de Lévis, Duke of Lévis (1719-1787), former commander of the French regular troops in North America, was appointed governor of Artois in 1765. In this missive, Lévis responds to a letter from a deputy of Artois asking for information concerning Mr. Le Ricque de Marquais, who wishes to obtain the position of lieutenant of the marshals of France for Artois. Lévis states that he does not to know him personally, but in response to the request has written a letter to the state deputies for the province. He encloses their reply. We do not have this reply, but we know that Le Ricque de Marquais succeeded in obtaining the position, since at the General Estates held in in 1789 in Arras, in the province of Artois, he was among the gentlemen present, and he was lieutenant of the marshals in Béthune.
