Scope and Content

This sub-subseries chronicles marriages in three generations of the Robillard family, from the mid-18th to the mid-19th century. It contains notarized copies of four marriage contracts.

The first document, dated November 11, 1750, registers the marriage contract between Claude Robillard and Marie Anne Cardinal of August 17, 1750, in the parish of St. Joachim in Pointe Claire (today Pointe-Claire). The groom, Claude Robillard, a "habitant from the parish of St. Anne," is the son of Nicolas Robillard and Françoise Cecire of the same parish. Marie Anne Cardinal is the daughter of the late Pierre Cardinal and the late Marie Anne Matou, inhabitants of the parish of Saints-Anges de Lachine. The witnesses for the groom are his father and mother, while those for the bride are her cousin Joseph Denis and her sister-in-law Marie Joseph Meloche.

The next two marriage contracts are for Michel (or Michael) Robillard. The first, created July 11, 1797, before notary Louis Thibaudeau of Pointe-Claire, covers his marriage to Catherine Brabant. "Michael Robillard" is a "day labourer of legal age living in the parish of St. Anne in Côte Sainte-Marie at the tip of the island." His bride, also of legal age, resides in the same parish. Witnesses for the groom are his father Joseph Robillard, his brother and sister-in-law Joseph Robillard and Catherine Lantier, his uncle Raphael Robillard, his brother-in-law and sister Joseph Legault and Marie Reine Robillard, and his cousin Jean-Baptiste Pilon. On the bride's side, the witnesses are her father Jean-Baptiste Brabant, her brother Pierre Brabant, her brother-in-law and sister François Pilon and Angélique Brabant, and her friend Archibald McDonald. In addition to the aforementioned, the following individuals also signed the document with an X: Geneviève Robillard, Pierre Vallé, Michel Brunet, François Brabant and Bonaventure Bregon. Joseph Robillard deposited the document at the registry office on September 8, 1797.

The second marriage contract of Michel Robillard, widower of Catherine Brabant, is dated May 5, 1811, and unites him with Félicité Sureau, "daughter of legal age of the late Antoine Sureau and Élisabeth Jamme, residents of the parish of Côte St. Jean in Pointe Claire," where the wedding would be held. The groom is described as a "farmer from Côte Sainte-Marie" by the same notary, Thibaudeau, and his bride is accompanied by her uncle Jacques Trotier. The witnesses to the agreement are, on the groom's side, his father Joseph Robillard and his brother of the same name, his brother-in-law and sister Pierre Vallé and Élisabeth Robillard, his brothers-in-law Joseph Legault and Amable Lauzon, his nieces Catherine Robillard and Catherine Neveu, his brother-in-law and sister-in-law Michel Brunet and Françoise Brabant, his nephew Jean-Baptiste Neveu, his friend Joachim […]. On the bride's side, in addition to the aforementioned uncle, witnesses are "her grandmother, Elisabeth [Aumais]," her friends Antoine Trotier and Veronique Théoret, her cousin Marguerite Trotier, her friend Angélique Trotier and her cousins Jean Baptiste Pilon and Marguerite Jamme. The contract was submitted by Michel Robillard and recorded by the prothonotary Saveuse de Beaujeu in the King's Court of the Montreal district on June 21, 1811.

The last document, dated January 31, 1848, is a copy of the marriage contract between Sévère Robillard and Adélaide Jammes dit Carrière, written by P. C. [Pierre-Charles] Valois, public notary. The groom, of legal age, is a "farmer living in the parish of St. Anne on the tip of the Island of Montreal, son of the late [Sieur] Michel Robillard and Madam Félicité Sirop [sic] dit Blondin." The bride, of legal age and "living in the parish of St. Joachim in Pointe Claire," is the daughter of "François Jammes dit Carrière, a farmer in the same place, and the late Madam Josephte Legault."  On the groom's side, the family and friends present for the signing of the contract are his brothers Joseph and Honoré Robillard, his sisters Josephte and Euphémie Robillard, his brothers-in-law Alexandre Sauvé and Rémi Legault, and his cousin Pierre Lauzon. Witnesses for the bride are her father, her brother Jean-Baptiste Jammes dit Carrière, her sister Josephte Jammes dit Carrière, her uncle Joseph Legault and her friend Charles Valois. It is interesting to note that, unlike in the preceding contracts, "the young bride" and some of the witnesses (Joseph and Honoré Robillard, Alexandre Sauvé) signed the document with the notary, while the groom and the other witnesses stated that they did know how to do so.
