Scope and ContentShort letter or note from William Lyon Mackenzie to Louis-Joseph Papineau. Both were leaders of the 1837 insurrections in the Canadas and had taken refuge in the United States. Papineau was in Albany and Mackenzie probably in New York, although his location is not specified. The note likely dates from 1838 or shortly after, since Mackenzie informs Papineau that the eight exiled patriots have arrived safe and sound from Bermuda. The time of writing is given at the bottom of the note: “4 p.m. Mondy [sic].”NotesSource of title: Based on the nature of the document.
