Scope and ContentIn the upper inside section of this folded composite document is an engraving with the caption “Montcalm blessé est ramené à Québec,” which had been published in Eugène Guénin’s book La Nouvelle-France: ouvrage illustré orné de 100 gravures et 5 cartes (Paris: Hachette, 1900, “Bibliothèque des écoles et des familles” series, pp. 326-329). Based on a drawing by the French illustrator Louis Bombled (1862-1927), it bears the mark of the French printer, engraver and draftsman Louis Geisler (1852-1914), considered to be the inventor of the three-colour photoengraving process. Beneath the opening in the cover through which this illustration appears are the handwritten words “Votre très humble et très obéissans serviteur Montcalm,” apparently written and signed in his own hand by Louis-Joseph de Montcalm, Marquis of Montcalm (1712-1759), commander of the French forces in North America during the Seven Years’ War (1754-1763).
