Scope and ContentThis document is divided into three sections, and has been used back-to-back. The first section consists of a list of expenses for the provincial regiment of the governor of the “Province of Massachusetts Bay,” William Shirley (1694-1771), raised in 1755 for the campaign of the Bay of Chignecto. Shirley fought the French in North America on several occasions during the War of Austrian Succession (1740-1748), notably at the time of the siege of Louisbourg, in 1745, and the Seven Years’ War (1754-1763). In June 1755 the regiment took part in the capture of the French Fort Beauséjour. Shirley displayed particular cruelty toward the Acadian deportees who arrived in Boston harbour:  by preventing them from disembarking, he caused half of the 12,000 refugees to die of cold and malnutrition. The second part of the document records the expenses generated by the French and Acadian prisoners kept at Fort Cumberland in 1764-1765. The author of this section is unknown. The third part consists of a biography of Lieutenant-Colonel John Winslow (1725-1774), who was serving in Shirley’s regiment during the capture of Fort Beauséjour. The biography was added by the great-grandson of General John Winslow (1753-1819), who was probably the son of the John Winslow who fought at Beauséjour. Finally, the document includes a list of the possessions of the widow Anna Winslow, who died in 1816. General John Winslow was one of her executors.
