Scope and ContentPoem by an unknown author celebrating General James Wolfe.

Though a remarkably skilled officer, James Wolfe (1727-1759) proved a poor commander during the 1759 siege of Quebec. He was indecisive, and constantly at odds with his general staff and with the navy. Three long months of siege had produced no results, and the British only succeeded in capturing Quebec in extremis, after having won the Battle of the Plains of Abraham on September 13. That day, wounded in the hand and chest, the 32-year-old general lost his life. But his heroic death on the battlefield cemented his fame forever: in England he was hailed as a martyr and a symbol of British patriotism. During the 18th century Wolfe would be celebrated in all the art forms, including poetry, as witness this document.
