Scope and ContentRequest from Edward Boscawen (1711-1761) to the officers in charge of the Nore anchorage site, at the mouth of the Thames, in England, for permission to berth his ships. The Nore, which offers access to the North Sea, had been the main anchorage site of the British Royal Navy since the 16th century. Among other things, Boscawen inquires about the best place to anchor his 40 warships and 20 smaller vessels. In a postscript, he asks who he should appeal to for advice on what he should do while garrisoned in the port.

Edward Boscawen was an officer in the British navy who served during the War of Austrian Succession (1740-1748) and the Seven Years’ War (1754-1763). He is known especially for having been the admiral in command of the fleet that captured the Alcide and the Lys, two of the three French ships that arrived in New France in 1755 to provide reinforcements. This event triggered France’s official entry into the war in 1756, although battles had been taking place for two years prior.
