Scope and ContentMarriage contract between Jacques François Jullion and Julienne-François-Geneviève Desmarre. Jullion was a waiter at His Majesty’s château and therefore in close contact with the king. The father of Desmarre, his intended, was a parliamentary lawyer. The document includes the agreements reached between the two parties (community of property, contract, provisions, exemptions and special clauses) and a list of the dignitaries present, along with the signatures of the most important. Among these were the Louis XV (1710-1774) and his mistress, Jeanne-Antoinette Poisson, Marquise of Pompadour and Duchess of Menars (1721-1764).NotesSource of title: based on the nature of the document.
Signatures and inscriptions: signed by Louis XV and Madame de Pompadour; stamped “Acte des notaires de Paris.”
Physical description: 9½ pages; sheets held together by blue silk ribbons.
Immediate source of acquisition: purchased from Diana J. Rendell for $4,000.
General notes: the king grants the future spouses a lifetime annuity of 600 pounds.
