A Deck of Cards
Hand-stitched appliqués of all four playing card suits on the skirt indicate Alice Scott’s character. Her bodice was repurposed from another dress. Her portraits show some elements now missing: a hat with playing cards nestled amidst ostrich plumes, and a black lace overskirt decorated with cards and cutouts that has been replaced by a more recent yellow cotton one. Alice Scott’s homemade fan with card cutouts is an exceptional survival.
