Scrapbook

The scrapbook covers the activities of the Diggers and Weeders Garden Club of Montreal between 1939 and 1974, with a special focus on the 1950s. There are photographs of club members at shows and events, both posed group shots and snapshots of them working in their gardens. Other photographs depict gardens, flower arrangements and some of the club's other horticultural creations, including Christmas trees and wreaths, the landscaping at the Queen Mary Veterans' Hospital (now the Montreal University Institute of Geriatrics) and the garden at the Lethbridge Rehabilitation Centre. The club's activities at the Queen Mary Veterans' Hospital are also documented in a landscape plan and drawing. Clippings from Montreal newspapers provide information on the club's commitment to this hospital and club members' involvement in various competitions, including the Fête des Fleurs organized by the Montreal Museum of Fine Arts. The scrapbook contains a ribbon won at one such competition. Among the clippings are also obituaries of members. Printed matter and a certificate of honorary membership illustrate the club’s ties with the National Council of State Garden Clubs in the United States. Finally, texts written by members discuss growing herbs, the horticultural news of 1939, and the importance of preserving wild-grown flowers.
