Scrapbook
This
scrapbook is a compilation of unpublished works produced from 1892 to 1895 by
the members of the Pen and Pencil Club of Montreal (Edward Westhead Arthy, E.
B. Brownlow, William Brymner, Thomas Joseph Workman Burgess, Edmond Dyonnet,
Robert Harris, William R. Hope, Maxime Ingres, Paul T. Lafleur, John E. Logan,
Kenneth Ross MacPherson, William McLennan, J. MacDonald Oxley, C. E. L.
Porteous, Frederick George Scott, Forbes Torrance, W. Townsend and J.
Try-Davies). It contains drawings, watercolours and a variety of poetry and
prose genres, either handwritten, typed or printed. These works were inspired
by themes imposed on the club's members. Among the themes used were
"Illusions," " Neighbourhood," "The Monk,"
"A Star," "Force," "The Slave,"
"Boredom," "Night," "Pessimism," "The
Judge," "The Beggar," "The Prison," "The
Amulet," "The Corpse," "The Misanthrope," "The
Druid," Coup de grâce," "The Farewell," "The Contract,"
"The Veteran," "The New Woman," "The Flag" and
"The Scapegoat." Some of themes refer to historical, biblical or
mythic figures like "Columbus," "Tubal-Cain,"
"Pandora" and "The Sphinx."
