Biographical Sketch

Fascinated by the history of business, Canadian businessman Seymour Schulich, who earned an M.B.A. from McGill University in 1965, has put together a collection of old stock certificates issued by companies in Canada and the United States.

Mr. Schulich was a member of the boards of directors of the Mount Sinai Hospital and the World Gold Council. He is also vice-chairman emeritus of pension fund manager Beutel, Goodman & Company Limited. He has also served as a member of the board of Newmont Capital Limited.

He has gained over 30 years of business experience in large corporations specializing in natural resources, mining, and oil and gas, and was a cofounder of Franco-Nevada Mining Corporation Limited, based in Toronto. He was also a member of the board of Euro-Nevada Mining Corporation Limited.

Mr. Schulich has been a long-time investor in the Junior Achievers program, and as a governor of Junior Achievement of Canada, he established the Seymour Schulich Business Scholarship to promote the development of entrepreneurship in Canada. This award is open to high school graduates who are heading to university.

Mr. Schulich is a philanthropist who has made major donations to the Schulich Heart Centre of Sunnybrook Hospital and to McGill University's Library of Science and Engineering. The Faculty of Commerce of York University was renamed the Schulich School of Business in honour of his $15,000,000 donation. It is one of the leading business schools in Canada. A third of the M.B.A. graduates entering the Ontario job market come from the Schulich School of Business.

Scholarships, university chairs and teaching awards that will benefit Canada's academic community for many years to come have also been established thanks to Mr. Schulich's generosity. In the spring of 2003, York University made him a Doctor of Laws, honoris causa. He had already, in 1996, been appointed to the university's board of directors and to its investment committee.

In recognition of his many contributions, Mr. Schulich was made a Member of the Order of Canada on April 26, 2000.
