Biographical Sketch

Charles Howard Millar (1856-1939) was the eighth child of Robert James Millar and Eliza Robins of Drummondville. Charles H. became postmaster and registrar of Drummondville Co. and held the post for many years. Photography was his hobby. He married Ida Stewart McDougall in 1885. Ida was the daughter of the founder of Grantham Iron Works. Charles H. Millar and his wife had three sons and three daughters. One of the sons is the donor of the fonds, Leslie Howard Millar (born in 1891).

Robert James Millar (1815-1877) built the family house, known as Lord's Farm, on the site of Lord's Tavern, and his father, James Grant Millar (1782-1865), was captain-adjutant of the 16th Royals and came to Drummondville in 1815. Annie G. McDougall (P451) was a niece of Mrs. Charles H. Millar.

In 1979 and 1980, the McCord organized a travelling exhibit that featured Millar's work and was titled Drummondville, 1890.

Scope and Content

The Charles Howard Millar and Millar family fonds includes photographs taken by the former. Millar's photographs depict his family, landscapes, views and people of Drummondville and their surroundings.

Also included in the fonds are family portraits by various photographers and studios, including Notman, as well as postcards, an ambrotype and a daguerreotype.

In addition, the fonds contains textual and graphic materials, including 43 Christmas cards (ca. 1938), four marriage announcements, one death announcement, ten school diplomas or certificates that belonged to Ida Louise Millar and Margaret Kathleen Millar (ca. 1920), and one prospectus of St. Helen's School at Dunham, Quebec (ca. 1910).
