Biographical Sketch

Charles William Grant (1782-1842), a businessman born in Quebec City, inherited from his mother, Marie-Charles-Joseph Le Moyne de Longueuil, Baroness of Longueuil. The title of Baron was conferred on Le Moyne de Longueuil family in 1700 by Louis XIV. In 1818, Charles William Grant sold Saint Helen’s Island to the British government. He was Legislative Councillor of Lower Canada from 1811 to 1838.


Scope and Content

The Charles William Grant fonds provides information on the sale of Saint Helen's Island, Île Ronde and Île aux Fraises in 1818. It is a deed of sale between Grant and Sir John Coape Sherbrooke, Governor-in-Chief of British North America.

Archives Montréal holds the Philéas Gagnon collection (BM007), which includes several autographed letters from Jno Taylor (CA M001 BM007-1-D34-P0001).
