Biographical Sketch

John Charles Alison Heriot (1861-1928) was a Montréal architect. He also served as a militia captain in the 1st Prince of Wales Fusiliers and was for a time the secretary of the heraldic committee of the Antiquarian and Numismatic Society of Montreal. Heriot developed an interest in the history of his family and published an article on Major-General Frederick Heriot (1786-1843) and a pamphlet on George Heriot (1766-1844).

Scope and Content

The John Charles Alison Heriot fonds reflects the latter's interest in heraldry and genealogy. It consists of three series: John Charles Alison Heriot family, Heraldry and Family history.

As secretary of the heraldic committee of the Antiquarian and Numismatic Society of Montreal, Heriot corresponded with government officials such as A. G. Doughty and Joseph Pope on heraldry. There is also correspondence on the proposed Canadian coat of arms and a paper by Heriot titled "The Arms and Flags of Canada." Other materials include correspondence from relatives concerning genealogy and with professional genealogists, as well as monographs on Frederick and George Heriot. Also in these papers is official militia correspondence.

In addition, the John Charles Alison Heriot fonds has information on the McCord's Heriot sketchbook of 250 watercolour paintings.
