Scope and Content

This collection chiefly concerns currencies formerly used in Canada, as well as in the United States and Europe, from the late 17th century to around 1970. Through vouchers and other forms of paper money, the collection provides information on numismatics and changing methods of payment, and the development of various banks, such as the Dominion Bank of Canada, the People's Bank, the Kathairon Bank and the Carlow Bank.

It contains documents on numismatics, such as card money, authorizations of payment, vouchers, bills of exchange, bank notes, cheques and other documents such as a proclamation and a convention along with a memorial.

The collection also includes documentary material intended for coin collectors, such as auction catalogues, magazine excerpts, newspapers and books on numismatics.

The collection is divided into the following series:

C251/A Paper Money of Canada, [1685?]-1973;
C251/B Paper Money of the United States, 1707-1864;
C251/C Paper Money of European Countries, [post 1791]-1849;
C251/D Documentary Material, 1707-1957.
