Notes “The very acme of the phantasmagoria of an hour”

Inglis’s surviving “paste-up”—essentially a photographic collage—reveals the method behind the creation of a composite photograph. First, he or a studio employee sketched out the desired composition, and then photographed guests individually or in small groups. They subsequently cut out and glued the portraits onto a painted background depicting the interior of the rink. After rephotographing the whole, they could then generate any number of prints, from the full–size composite to the small stereograph.
