Notes

“The effect of the brilliant colours and the light is magical”

Notman’s ultimate result was this painted photograph, which was displayed at his studio for 65 years. To create the large format, a negative of the original paste-up was projected through a solar enlarger onto an emulsified canvas. Two leading members of the studio’s art department then hand coloured the surface in oil. Inglis announced that he also had a colourized version of his composite on display at his studio, but its whereabouts remain unknown.
