Scope and ContentProclamation of a public fast by the governor of the Province of Massachusetts Bay, Spencer Phips (1685-1757), aimed at preparing the population for a raising of troops during the early years of the Seven Years’ War (1754-1763). In the Protestant tradition, a public fast was a day of penitence and fasting during which the faithful acknowledged that God was imposing a test or a humiliation upon them for their sins, in this case war. At the same time, the people were expected to discuss the way they would express their repentance, in this case by taking up arms and doing battle against the French invaders and their Indigenous allies.
