Notes
Mary, Mary, Quite Contrary, 1907
Mary, Mary, quite contrary,
How does your garden grow?
With silver bells and cockle shells
And pretty maids all in a row.
Look closely and you will see the clues in the dress and photograph that enabled us to identify the character that Alice Graham portrayed at the age of 14. Characters from nursery rhymes were highly recommended for children; these costumes were also often cobbled together at home.
