In the late 1920s and early 1930s, Wilfrid Bovey, then director of McGill University's Department of Extramural Relations, set up a service to provide the public with illustrated lectures on a variety of subjects. The almost 50 illustrated lectures that were produced were divided into five series of varying importance: geography and travel, history, science, natural history and religion.

The lecture kits, which were mailed out to institutions or groups that requested them, were made up of lecture booklets and glass slides for magic lanterns. The McCord Museum has in the present collection some of the booklets and the accompanying glass slides.

Scope and Content

This collection deals with the whole of Canada and illustrates a type of teaching that McGill University engaged in during the 1920s and 1930s.

The collection contains pedagogical materials used for illustrated lectures: sets of glass slides and the accompanying teacher's books.
