Scope and ContentDuring the French revolutionary wars, Lieutenant-General Étienne Macdonald (1765-1840) wrote to General Laurent de Gouvion-Saint-Cyr (1764-1830) from the general headquarters in Utrecht to inform him of the movements of the troops in his division. He asks him to prepare lodgings for his soldiers and to provide the garrison with all the necessary essentials. Étienne Macdonald was named 1st Duke of Taranto and marshal of the empire during the First Empire, and duke and peer of France during the Second Restoration.

Signatures and inscriptions: signed “Salut et fraternité. Le général de division Macdonald”; letterhead drawing with republican and revolutionary symbols (a standing figure of Liberty with one hand resting on a lictor’s fasces and the other holding a pike topped with a Phrygian cap; wheatsheaf; canon); the printed words “Armée du Nord” in the heading have been crossed out.
