Scope and ContentTaking advantage of the War of Austrian Succession (1740-1748) being waged in Europe between England and France, the Province of Massachusetts Bay planned to capture the fort of Louisbourg, in Cape Breton, which posed a threat to its fishing grounds and coastline. On January 26, 1744 the governor of Massachusetts, William Shirley (1694-1771), proclaimed that 3,000 volunteers were needed for an expedition aimed at conquering Louisbourg. Instructions were issued regarding the raising of troops. The attack on the town was scheduled for June 28, 1745, but the Treaty of Aix-la-Chapelle ended the war and returned Louisbourg to France.
