Scope and ContentBook containing copies of the letters of grenadier sergeant James Thompson (1733-1830) transcribed by his son James Thompson Jr. (1784-1869). In 1830 James Thompson Jr. began assembling a written record of his father’s military career composed of two books of copies of letters that bear the title “PRIVATE JOURNAL” on the spine, which he divided into numbered anecdotes. The first volume, containing anecdotes 1 to 26, is kept at the Bibliothèque et Archives nationales du Québec. This second volume contains the end of anecdote 26 and those that follow up to anecdote 42, although anecdotes 30-33 are missing. Section 43, transcribed in St. John’s in 1849, represents about two thirds of the book and consists of the memoirs of James Thompson Jr. when he was Assistant Commissary General in the Eastern Townships, during the rebellions of 1837-1838 and up to 1846, when he was appointed Deputy Commissary General before finally retiring.

James Thompson the elder arrived in North America in 1757 as a volunteer in the 78th Regiment of Foot (Fraser’s Highlanders) during the Seven Years’ War (1754-1763). Among other things, he took part in the siege of Louisbourg in 1758, the Battle of the Plains of Abraham in 1759 and the Battle of Sainte-Foy in 1760. The first 28 anecdotes cover the period of the Seven Years’ War, while anecdotes 29 to 42 deal with his work as supervisor of the fortifications of Quebec City and the American War of Independence (1775-1783).
