Viger belonged to the early 19th century’s French-Canadian middle class and had an interest, like many other of its members, in politics and the liberal professions. Having studied law from 1794 to 1799 , he was called to the bar in March of that year. Viger would become one of the leading politicians of the Canadian party, later the Patriote party. He would be involved his entire life in the politics of Lower Canada, both as an elected representative and as a journalist.
