Scope and ContentEdmund Wells was a captain in the Connecticut militia during the Seven Years’ War (1754-1763). He left a journal that includes an account of a campaign he led in the summer of 1757. On May 2 he was in Colchester, Connecticut, along with the men of his company, and there they received their weapons. The document lists, in table form, the numbered weapons distributed among the company’s 53 soldiers. Later, they travelled to Fort Edward and remained there, never rejoining the British army during the siege of Fort William Henry, which took place from August 3 to 6, 1757. Notably, one of the men, called Oxford Negro, was likely a freed slave.
