The Scottish merchant Hugh Robertson and his brother founded the Glasgow firm of Hugh Robertson and Company, which specialized in import-export. A Montreal branch was opened in 1815, and Joseph Masson (1791-1847), a former employee there, was appointed manager and became a shareholder. The company was henceforth known as Robertson, Masson and Company. Masson eventually became majority shareholder and the firm diversified, opening new branches named for various shareholders and partners. Joseph Masson was one of the most successful French-Canadian businessmen of the first half of the 19th century.

Scope and ContentList summarizing Hugh Robertson and Company deliveries for the spring of 1843 made by two ships charged with transporting goods from Liverpool to Robertson, Masson and Company, in Montreal. The first vessel named is the Mersey, under captain Robert Hamilton, and the second the Safeguard, captained by A. J. Smith. The list describes the goods as well as giving their value and the names of the customers for whom they are destined.
