Scope and ContentCollections of draft letters addressed to one or more unknown recipients during the Regency period (1715-1723). The author of the letters was probably Charles Mordaunt, 3rd Earl of Peterborough and 1st Earl of Monmouth (about 1658-1735), a former English general and an experienced diplomat. Peterborough settled in Paris and in 1717 began frequenting the salon of Madame de Nancré, the mother of Louis-Jacques-Aimé-Théodore de Dreux, Marquis of Nancré (?-1719), French ambassador to Madrid.

Nancré was sent to Madrid in March 1718 by Cardinal Guillaume Dubois (1656-1723), chief minister to the regent Philippe d’Orléans (1674-1723), charged with thwarting the political ambitions in the Mediterranean of Cardinal Giulio Alberoni (1664-1752), prime minister to the king of Spain, Philippe V (1683-1746). Constantly scheming against the emperor Charles VI (1685-1740), Peterborough allied himself with Dubois’s political rivals, whose aim was rather to align with Spain in order to hinder the emperor’s Mediterranean ambitions.
