Notes
The Marquise de Denonville
French Viceroys and Governors set
Virginie Chartrand, wife of Olivier Faucher, portrayed the wife of the Marquis Jacques-René de Brisay de Denonville, governor general of New France from 1685 to 1689. While her garb looks very much like contemporary evening dress, the sleeves were designed to mimic the slashing in vogue in the late 17th century. Such extreme degradation of the silk fabric and tarnishing of metallic trims are the norm, not the exception, in garments of this age.
