Scope and Content

On November 18, 1903, notary Jean-Marie Richard of St. Ours wrote this short note, with its neat penmanship, to introduce himself to Jeanne Cartier of St. Antoine-sur-Richelieu. He explains that he knows her by reputation and that he knows her brother. In a single long sentence prefaced by justifications for the boldness of his request, he proposes that they get to know each other. The notary also specifies that, if she turns him down, he would like the calling card attached to his letter to be destroyed, as it could be "prejudicial." Both pages are embossed with Jean-Marie Richard's notarial seal.
