Collection
This collection concerns navigation and transportation in Canada. More specifically, it contains information about marine shipping companies, ships, and freight transportation by water, on canals and the St. Lawrence.
There are documents on the Allan Steamship Line and the White Star Line, including contracts for postal service between Canada and the United Kingdom. There are also ship waybills, documents on inland navigation (canals), correspondence about the state of navigation on the St. Lawrence, as well as files on a few ships, including the Mermaid, the Catherine and the excursion ship Beauharnois. The collection also contains a handwritten register (1865-1868) providing information on damaged vessels that docked at St. John's, Newfoundland, and estimates of the costs incurred for their repairs or the loss of their cargo.
