Biographical Sketch

A native of London (England), William Carpenter Bompas (1834-1906) was ordained a priest of the Church of England in 1865. He engaged in missionary activities in the Mackenzie River area of northern Canada and was named the first Anglican bishop of the following dioceses: Arthabaska (1874), Mackenzie River (1884) and Selkirk (1891). In 1888, he wrote a History of the Diocese of Mackenzie River and was also the author of some translations of religious works into indigenous dialects.

Scope and Content

The William Carpenter Bompas fonds concerns his role as a missionary and bishop in northern Canada and, to a lesser extent, his interest in languages.

The fonds consists of correspondence to his family describing his travels, the socio-economic life of indigenous peoples, the climate, flora and fauna of the region and gold mining in the Yukon. There are also sermons in English and in indigenous languages and two volumes of notes on indigenous languages.
