Biographical Sketch

Born is Fifeshire, Scotland, James Morgan (fl 1897-1923) came to Canada at an early age and was educated at Montréal High School. He joined the family dry goods firm of Henry Morgan and Co. and eventually became the president. Morgan was also quite active in other business ventures such as the Colonial Real Estate Company and the Montréal Cement Co. He was involved in local philanthropic, political and cultural activities including the Montréal General Hospital, the Montréal Citizens Association and the Montréal Art Association. A patron of the arts, Morgan lent his financial support to Canadian artists such as Ben Foster, Clarence A. Gagnon and George Chauvignaud. In the cases of the latter two artists, Morgan agreed to finance their European studies in exchange for paintings by them.
