Madame Joliet
Explorers, Discoverers and Visitors set
Mary Van Horne, Sir William Van Horne’s sister, portrayed Françoise Bissot, who married explorer Louis Jolliet in the late 17th century. She used a spelling that gave a nod to the Van Horne family’s hometown of Joliet, Illinois. The fontange headdress and row of bows on her bodice evoke styles of that period, but the hourglass silhouette is very much of 1898!
