Scope and ContentKing James II (1633-1701), in exile in France at Saint-Germain-en-Laye, informs his cousin, Cardinal Rinaldo d'Este (1655-1737), that the situation in Ireland has improved and thanks him for continuing to ensure the Pope’s support of his claim to the English throne. Deposed by William of Orange (1650-1702) in 1688, James II landed in Ireland the following year with the support of Louis XIV, in an attempt to recover his kingdom. Defeated in 1690 at the Battle of the Boyne, he returned to France, where he remained for the rest of his life. At the time the letter was written, things were not going well for James II and his claim to the throne.NotesSource of title: based on the nature of the document.
